Ahtanum™ is a newer aroma variety bred by Select Botanicals Group in the Yakima Valley. Previously named YCR 1 CV, this hop takes the name Ahtanum from the area, in the Yakima Valley, where one of the first Washington State hop farms was established by Charles Carpenter in 1869. Ahtanum offers lower Alpha Acids with a similar aroma to Amarillo or Cascade. It predominantly smells like pink grapefruit with some woodsy and floral notes that have been described as geranium.
Aroma: Similar to Cascade or Amarillo – Citrus (Grapefruit) and Floral. Some woodsy, earthy notes too.
Alpha Acid: Usually between 5.7-6.3%
Typical Usage: Aroma for the most part. Some have used it as a moderate bittering hop for lighter styles.
Beer Styles: Pales, IPA, and a nice American Brown.
